<전시소개>
한글 서예의 다양한 서체로 만나는 한국위인 및 사상가들의 어록을 통해 살아있는 정신을 배우고자 하였으며, 그 깊은 멋을 통해 인생의 이정표를 찾고자 하였다.

1. Sejong the Great (1397-1450, 4th KingoftheJoseonDynasty)Quote, 35×90㎝

" 남을 너그럽게 받아들이는 사람은 항상 사람들의 마음을 얻게 되고
위엄과 무력으로 엄하게 다스리는 자는 항상 사람들의 노여움을 사게 된다."

“Generous man will always gain heart of others but a man who rule with only dignity and force will gain anger of his people.”


2. Sejong the Great, < Hunminjeongeum Preface>,70×46㎝, revised

나랏말싸미 듕귁에 달아 문자와로 서르 사맛디 아니할쎄
이런 전차로 어린 백셩이 니르고져 홇베이셔도
마참네 제 뜨들 시러펴디 몯핧 노미하니라
내 이랄 위하야 어엿비너겨 새로 스믈 여듧 짜랄 맹가노니
사람마다 해여 수비니겨 날로 쑤메 뻔한킈 하고져 할따라미니라

우리나라 말이 중국과 달라 한자와는 서로 잘 통하지 아니한다.
이런 까닭으로 어리석은 백성들이 말하고자 하는 바있어도 마침내 제 뜻을 펴지 못하는 사람이 많다.
내가 이것을 가엽게 생각하여 새로 스물여덟 글자를 만드니, 모든 사람들로 하여금 쉬이 익혀서 날마다 쓰는 데 편하게 하고자 할 따름이니라.

“Our spoken language hardly coincides with written language in Chinese character.
Hence, uneducated people have no means to communicate in written language.
I sympathized with those people and have made 28 characters; it is easy for all the people to learn and to be used in everyday life, enhancing the life of people.”


3. Toegye Lee-hwang (1501-1570 civil-minister and scholar in the mid-term of Joeson) Quote, 50×28㎝

모기는 산을 짊어질 수 없고 작대기는 큰 집을 버틸수 없다.
 
“A small mosquito cannot bear up a mountain and a short stick cannot support a house.”


4. Yulgok Yi I (1536-1584) < Jagyeongmun>summary, 70×65×3㎝

율곡이 어머니를 여읜 채 상심하여 19세에 불교를 연구해 보려고 금강산으로 들어갔다가 20세 되던 해 봄에 강릉의 외조모가 계신 곳으로 돌아 나와, 자기 수양의 조목을 삼고자 지은 글의 본문을 요약하면 다음과 같다.

“After losing his mother, with a great grieve he goes to Mt. Geumgang to study Buddihism in age of 19. In spring, when he turned 20, he goes to his grandmother in Gangneung, Followings are summary of the body text that he wrote to make pillar for self-discipline.”

· Follow the life of saints with great vision in heart.
· Calm minded people speak few words and thus speak less
· Our mind is a living being. When it is distracted, meditate in order to calm the mind.
· Don’t harbor malicious thoughts when alone. Be alert and suspicious of harboring them because every evil begins when we fail to abstain it.
· It is useless when knowledge we obtained by reading is not put into action. We read to do better work. When there is work to do, distinguish right and wrong and properly process the work then go back to reading.
· Do not hope for wealth and honor. Do not do work only halfway but put your whole heart in it.
· Even when you can be on the top of the world, do not commit one wrongful deed nor take away one life.
· When other does wrong to me, examine myself and try hard to influence and help the other.
· When family is neither kind nor sweet enough, it is because I lack sincerity, I should reflect myself.
· Don’t lie down nor rest unless there is a disease or when time to go to bed.
· Don’t rush nor procrastinate studying because it naturally ends after death.


5. Master Wonhyo (617-686 Buddhist priest of Silla Dynasty) Quote, , 35×35㎝

지혜로운 이가 하는 일은 쌀로 밥을 짓는 것과 같고
어리석은 자가 하는 일은 모래로 밥을 짓는 것과 같다.
수레의 두 바퀴처럼 행동과 지혜가 갖추어지면
새의 두 날개처럼 나에게 이롭고 남도 돕게 된다.

Wise man’s deeds are like making steamed rice with rice
Foolish man’s deeds are like making rice with sand,
When action and wisdom are given as two wheels on a wagon
They are beneficial to not only myself but to others like the wings of a bird
(Wise man can benefit many and himself)


6. Yi Sun-shin (1545-1598, Great commander of mid-term dynasty of Joseon) Quote, 70×37㎝

집안이 나쁘다고 탓하지 마라
나는 몰락한 역적의 가문에서 태어나 가난 때문에 외갓집에서 자라났다
머리가 나쁘다 말하지 마라
나는 첫 시험에서 낙방하고 서른 둘의 늦은 나이에 겨우 과거에 급제했다
좋은 직위가 아니라고 불평하지 말라
나는 14년 동안 변방 오지의 말단 수비장수로만 돌았다
윗사람의 지시라 어쩔 수 없다고 말하지 말라
나는 불의한 직속 상관들과의 불화로 몇 차례나 파면과 불이익을 받았다
몸이 약하다고 고민 하지 마라
나는 평생동안 고질적인 위장병과 전염병으로 고통 받았다
기회가 주어지지 않는다고 불평하지 말라
나는 적군의 침입으로 나라가 위태로워진 후에야 마흔 일곱에 제독이 되었다
조직의 지원이 없다고 실망하지 말라
나는 스스로 논밭을 갈아 군자금을 만들었고 스물 세 번 싸워 스물 세 번 모두 이겼다
윗사람이 알아주지 않는다고 불만 갖지말라
나는 끊임없는 임금의 오해와 의심으로 모든 공을 뺏긴 채 옥살이를 해야 했다
자본이 없다고 절망하지 말라
나는 빈손으로 돌아온 전쟁터에서 열 두 척의 낡은 배로 133척의 적을 막았다
옳지 못한 방법으로 자식을 사랑한다 말하지 말라
나는 스무 살의 아들을 적의 칼날에 잃었고 또 다른 아들들과 함께 전쟁터로 나섰다
죽음이 두렵다고 말하지 말라
나는 적들이 물러가는 마지막 전투에서 스스로 죽음을 택했다

Don’t blame the situation or others, instead make the best out of what you are given and overcome the obstacles. Then impossible become possible because when there is a strong will there is a way.



7. Choe Chi-won (858- ,Scholar and poet of the late Unified Silla period), <海鷗(stroll)-Sea Gull>, 70×36㎝

꽃물결 따라 이리저리 날아다니네.
털옷 가볍게 가다듬고 나서니 참으로 물 우의 신선일세.
티끌 세상 밖으로 마음껏 드나들고
신선세계 다른 하늘도 거침없이 가고 오네.
벼이삭 기장 맛도 좋아할 줄 모르고
풍월의 참 맛만 깊이 사랑하네.
아마 장자의 나비의 꿈 도
내가 그대를 꿈꾸는 것 같으리라.

Flutter here and there after the waves of petals
Heading out with trimmed fur clothes, it is like a hermit on a surface of water
Come in and out of small world,
Come in and out of the skies of immortal world
Do not know the taste of sweet rice
But only adore the taste of conversing with nature
Maybe the dream of the butterfly of Jangja
Is same as I am dreaming of you
Prefers to be in the nature than secular world.

慢隨花浪飄飄然
輕擺毛衣眞水仙
出沒自由塵外境
往來何妨洞中天
稻粱滋味好不識
風月性靈深可憐
想得漆園蝴蝶夢
只應如我對君眠

8. King Jeongjo (1752-1800, 22th king of Joseon Dynasty), Quote, , 50×44㎝
 
말은 가리지 않으면 안되고, 마음은 확고하지 않으면 안되고, 뜻은 높지 않으면 안되고, 도량은 넓지 않으면 안되고, 일은 진실하지 않으면 안되며, 학문은 힘쓰지 않으면 안된다.
 
Words need to be watched, mind need to be adamant, vision need to be held high, generosity need to be abundant, working need to be honest, studying need to be diligent


9. Jeong Yak-yong (Silhak scholar in later term of Joseon) Quote, 35×35㎝

돈이 있으면 곧 서재를 짓고, 돈이 없으면 곧 책궤라도 갖추어 낮엔 창문 앞에서 옛글을 보고, 밤엔 등잔 밑에서 글 뜻을 찾네. 가난한 자는 글로 인하여 부해지고, 부한자는 글로 인하여 귀하게 될 것이며, 어리석은 자는 글로써 어질게 되고, 어진자는 글로써 이롭게 될 것이니라.

Build a library when there is money, but if not make a book box and read in front of windows during days, and read under candle light at night. Poor man will gain wealth through reading, and wealthy man will become valuable through reading, foolish man will become wise through reading, and wise man will benefit through reading.
Man will become wise by reading and studying.


10. Ahn Chang-ho (Independence activist and educator), <Oppourtunity>, 70×70㎝
 
흔히 사람들은 기회를 기다리고 있지만 기회는 기다리는 사람에게 잡히지 않는 법이다. 우리는 기회를 기다리는 사람이 되기 전에 기회를 얻을 수 있는 실력을 갖춰야 한다.

People wait for an opportunity to turn up but it will never be shown for those who only wait. We should qualify ourselves to deserve such an opportunity before waiting for it to come to us.


11. Kim Gu (1876-1949, Independence activist and politician), Quote, <Power of Culture), 46×65㎝

오직 한없이 가지고 싶은 것은 높은 문화의 힘이다. 문화의 힘은 우리 자신을 행복하게 하고, 나아가서 남에게 행복을 주기 때문이다.

The only thing that I desire in infinitely is the power of a noble culture. This is because the power of culture makes ourselves both happy and gives happiness to others.


12. Han Yong-un (1879-1944, Monk, poet and independence activist), <Nidana>, 54×40㎝

함께 영원할 수 없음을 슬퍼말고
잠시라도 함께 있음을 기뻐하고 좋아해 주지 않음을
노여워 말고 이만큼 좋아해 주는 것에 만족하고
나만 애태운다고 원망치 말고
애처롭기까지 한 사랑을 할 수 있음을 감사하고
주기만 하는 사랑이라 지치지 말고
더 많이 줄 수 없음을 아파하고
남과 함께 즐거워한다고 질투하지 말고
나의 기쁨이라 여겨 함께 기뻐할 줄 알고
이룰 수 없는 사랑이라 일찍 포기하지 말고
깨끗한 사랑으로 오래 간직할 수 있는
나는 당신을 그렇게 사랑하렵니다

Even when my lover is not giving as much as I desire, I will still be happy and contented for the love I received no matter the weight of it. And that is how I want to love you, to keep our love pure. Pure and persistent love toward his lover


13. Stephen Kim Sou-hwan (1922.5.8 – 2009.2.16, Cardianl Quotes), <Candle>, 35×35㎝

촛불이 빛을 내려면 스스로 불타야 한다.

If a candle wants to light, it has to burn.


14. Yoo Young-mo (1890-1981, Educator and religious man), <Thought> 35×67㎝

생각은 사랑이 있을 때 피어나는 하나의 정신적인 불꽃이다. 사랑의 정신으로 꽃피울 때 참으로 불꽃이 되어 살아나오는 것이 생각이다. 나란 바로 정신이다.

Thought is a spiritual flame that blooms where there is love. When bloomed within spiritual love, the flame truly revives. I, myself, is the spirit.


15. Ham Seok-heon (1901-1989), Quote, <Living mind>, 35×35㎝

“힘이 없고 생각이 아니 나고 지식이 떨어지고 꾀가 모자라는 것은 정신이 죽었기 때문이다.”

“Being feeble and senseless is because the mind is dead”


16. Ham Seok-heon ,Quote, <The Great Power of Mind>, 70×35㎝

Our mind is the foundation of our culture. To have a strong culture, we need to have strong minds. Collecting minds of people, who learn to have deep thoughts and do good deeds, forming the pillar of nations, makes the strong minds. And thus we should strive to learn and put it into actions.

힘있게 살려면 위대한 정신의 힘이 있어야 한다. 모든 문화는 정신의 힘에 나타낸 것이다. 그러면 그 정신의 힘은 어떻게 하여야 길러지나 사상과 행동에 의해서다 산골짜기의 실같은 냇물이 모이면 물둥지가 되고 큰 물둥지를 이루면 발전을 할 수 있고 발전을 하면 여러 공장을 돌릴 수 있듯이 모든 사람이 깊이 생각하는 것과 도탁게 행하는 것이 모이면 놀라운 민족적인 정신의 물둥지가 된다. 그러므로 생각하고 행동하기를 힘쓰지 않으면 안된다.


17. Great Master Sotaesan (1891(Emperor Gojong 28)-1943, Founding Master of Won Buddhist) Buddhist Sermon, <True Freedom>, 70 ×35㎝

참 자유는 방종을 절제하는데 있어서 오고 큰 이익은 사욕을 버리는 데에서 오나니 그러므로 참 자유를 원하는 사람은 먼저 요를 잘 지치고 큰 이익을 구하는 사람은 공심을 양성하나니라.

True freedom comes from moderating self-indulgence; great benefit comes from discarding self-interest. 


18. Master Jeong-san (1900-1962, Won Buddhism 2ndBddihistPriest),<ThePractice>,67×36㎝

인생 생활에 신앙은 뿌리요, 수행은 원천이라 신앙심이 깊은 생활은 아무러한 역경난경에도 꿋꿋하여 굽히지 아니할 것이요. 수행이 깊은 생활은 어떠한 유혹에도 초연하여 평온함을 얻나니라.

The root of everyday life is faith and practice is the center, everyday life with strong faith will be firm in the face of adversity. Everyday life with deep practice will remain aloof from any temptations and thus gain tranquility. 


19. Master Dae-san (1914-1998), Sermon, <적공>, 35×70㎝

병아리는 어미닭의 품을 떠나지 않고 따라 다녀야 잘 클 수 있고 공부인은 스승의 품을 떠나지 않고 적공해야 큰 도를 이를 수 있나니 그대들은 대종사께서 만들어 주신 이 회상을만났을때부지런히공부하여성불하고좋은인연을많이 맺어 놓아야 하느니라.

Disciples should learn and attain Buddhahood diligently and make many good friends when they came across the platform Great Master had made.


20. Venerable Beopjeong (1932-2010), Quotation, <hope>, 28×70㎝

내 소망은 단순하게 사는 일이다.
그리고 평범하게 사는 일이다.
느낌과 의지대로 자연스럽게 살고 싶다.
그 누구도,내 삶을 대신해서 살아줄 수 없기
때문에 나는 나 답게 살고 싶다

My hope is to live simply. And live adequately. I want to live naturally with my own will. That is because no one can live my life for me and I want to live as myself.


21. Venerable Beopjeong Quotes, <Happiness>, 28×70㎝

행복의 비결은 필요한 것을 얼마나 갖고 있는가 아니라 불필요한 것에서 얼마나 자유로워져 있는가 하는 것이다.

Happiness does not come from how much you have but how free you are from the unnecessary matters of life.


22. Haemin Sunim writing, <The Dream>, 60×35㎝

마치 내 꿈이 벌써 이루어진 것처럼 자신감을 가지고 행동하세요. 그러면서 열심히 준비하세요. 그러면 신기하게도 그 꿈은 이루어집니다.

Act as your dream already came true. And prepare yourself diligently. Then like a magic the dream actually comes true.


23. Kim Si-seup (1435-1493, Early Joseon Dynasty scholar, author, member of SaengYookShin), Poem, <Grace>, 46×32㎝

Looking at bamboos and flowers in a small garden,
This must be also grace came down from king
Even when taking a stroll,
Looking at the sky and the earth
Lost in the memories of being in politics,

고요한 마루 앞에 대나무 두어 줄기
자그마한 뜰에는 꽃이 일만 가지.
대나무 보고 또 꽃을 보면
그것도 또한 하나의 은총이어라.
동구 밖에선 구름 저절로 일어나고
돌 틈에선 샘물이 저절로 솟아나네.
하늘을 보고 땅을 보며 오락가락 거닐면서

24. YiKwangSoo(1892-1950,Writerandindependenceactivist),<SixParamitas>,70×67㎝

Six glorious virtues of Buddhism,

布施: help the secular lives, charity
持戒: following the precepts to retain self-restriction
忍辱: overcome the hardships
精進: continuous practice as Bodhisattva
禪定: tame one’s mind to reach rightful wisdom
般若: wisdom, contemplation, the doorways to truth

임에게 아까운 것 없이 무엇이나 바치고 싶은 이 마음,
거기서 나는 보시(布施)를 배웠노라
임에게 보이고자 애써 깨끗이 단장하는 이 마음,
거기서 나는 지계(持戒)를 배웠노라
임이 주시는 것이라면 때림이나 꾸지람이나 기쁘게 받는 이 마음,
거기서 나는 인욕(忍辱)을 배웠노라
자나 깨나 쉴 사이 없이 임을 그리워하고 임곁으로만 도는
이 마음, 거기서 나는 정진(精進)을 배웠노라
천하 하고 많은 사람 중에 오직 임만을 사모하는 이 마음,
